The first nine techniques are concerned with breathing.

So let us understand something about breathing, and then we will proceed to the techniques. We are breathing continuously from the moment of birth to the moment of death. Everything changes between these two points. Everything changes, nothing remains the same, only breathing is a constant thing between birth and death. The child will become a youth; the youth will become old. He will be diseased, his body will become ugly, ill, everything will change. He will be happy, unhappy, in suffering; everything will go on changing. But whatsoever happens between these two points, one must breathe.

Whether happy or unhappy, young or old, successful or unsuccessful -- whatsoever you are, it is irrelevant -- one thing is certain: between these two points of birth and death you must breathe. Breathing will be a continuous flow; no gap is possible. If even for a single moment you forget to breathe, you will be no more. That is why You are not required to breathe, because then it would be difficult. Someone might forget to breathe for a single moment, and then nothing could be done. So, really, you are not breathing, because you are not needed. you are fast asleep, and breathing goes on; you are unconscious, and breathing goes on; you are in a deep coma, and breathing goes on. you are not required; breathing is something which goes on in spite of you. It is one of the constant factors in your personality -- that is the first thing. It is something which is very essential and basic to life -- that is the second thing.

You cannot be alive without breath. So breath and life have become synonymous. Breathing is the mechanism of life, and life is deeply related with breathing. That is why in India we call it PRANA. We have given one word for both -- PRANA means the vitality, the aliveness. Your life is your breath. Thirdly, your breath is a bridge between you and your body. Constantly, breath is bridging you to your body, connecting you, relating you to your body. Not only is the breath a bridge to your body, it is also a bridge between you and the universe. The body is just the universe which has come to you, which is nearer to you. Your body is part of the universe. Everything in the body is part of the universe -- every particle, every cell. It is the nearest approach to the universe.

Breath is the bridge. If the bridge is broken, you are no more in the body. If the bridge is broken, you are no more in the universe. You move into some unknown dimension; then you cannot be found in space and time. So, thirdly, breath is also the bridge between you, and space and time. Breath, therefore, becomes very significant -- the most significant thing. So the first nine techniques are concerned with breath. If you can do something with the breath, you will suddenly turn to the present. If you can do something with breath, you will attain to the source of life. If you can do something with breath, you can transcend time and space. If you can do something with breath, you will be in the world and also beyond it. Breath has two points. One is where it touches the body and the universe, and another is where it touches you and that which transcends the universe. We know only one part of the breath. When it moves into the universe, into the body, we know it. But it is always moving from the body to the "no-body," from the "no-body" to the body.

We do not know the other point. If you become aware of the other point, the other part of the bridge, the other pole of the bridge, suddenly you will be transformed, transplanted into a different dimension. But remember, what Shiva is going to say is not yoga, it is tantra. Yoga also works on breath, but the work of yoga and tantra is basically different. Yoga tries to systematize breathing. If you systematize your breathing your health will improve. If you systematize your breathing, if you know the secrets of breathing, your life will become longer; you will be more healthy and you will live longer. You will be more strong, more filled with energy, more vital, alive, young, fresh. But tantra is not concerned with that. Tantra is concerned not with any systematization of breath, but with using breath just as a technique to turn inward.

One has not to practice a particular style of breathing, a particular system of breathing or a particular rhythm of breathing -- no! One has to take breathing as it is. One has just to become aware of certain points in the breathing. There are certain points, but we are not aware of them. We have been breathing and we will go on breathing -- we are born breathing and we will die breathing -- but we are not aware of certain points. And this is strange. Man is searching, probing deep into space. Man is going to the moon; man is trying to reach farther, from earth into space, and man has not yet learned the nearest part of his life. There are certain points in breathing which you have never observed, and those points are the doors -- the nearest doors to you from where you can enter into a different world, into a different being, into a different consciousness. But they are very subtle.

To observe a moon is not very difficult. Even to reach the moon is not very difficult; it is a gross journey. You need mechanization, you need technology, you need accumulated information, and then you can reach it. Breathing is the nearest thing to you, and the nearer a thing is, the more difficult it is to perceive it. The nearer it is, the more difficult; the more obvious it is, the more difficult. It is so near to you that again there is no space between you and your breathing. Or, there is such a small space that you will need a very minute observation, only then will you become aware of certain points. These points are the basis of these techniques. So now I will take each technique.

Zen Meditation

When somebody ask a Zen monk what do you do in meditation, he replies,

" I do nothing. I just sit empty and that's all I do."

Now I will describe a very interesting and simple meditation.

It is the 'Zen' Meditation. The 'Zen' is the word used in Eastern World (of Tibbet, Japan and China) for 'Dhyan' or Meditation.

Many great mediators have said about meditation -

"Just be still and know"

This Zen meditation is the methods of Zen monks who just be still and know. If you just sit still & empty, you will be doing Zen meditation. I will tell you how a lay man can do it.

The main thing is how to be still and empty from inside ?

Zen meditation is the technique which gradually takes us to the state of absolute stillness and emptiness. However it takes some time to master it. Nevertheless, it is one of the most easiest and effective meditation technique. Before starting Zen meditation it is essential to understand some important things about our mind. Our mind (whose physiological counterpart is Brain ) is consist of two parts- left and right mind (brain). Both these two left and right parts give rise to different creative urges in us. The left Brain takes care of logic, theology, philosophy, math and science etc. All the thought process happens in this left Brain. Where as the right mind give rise to music, art, painting, love & other emotions. The right mind immensely facilitates the process of meditation. Right mind do not think. It is deeply related to the source of infinite creativity. Here thoughts does not arise as a thinking process, rather anything happens as an instant flash of creativity. This part does not think. This part feels. In Zen meditation we'll use our right brain to make our mind free of thoughts

Sit in the lotus pose (cross legged) keeping your spine straight.

put your hands on each other in your lap.

[sitting in lotus pose with straight spine and touching your hands will ensure that you do not fall asleep]

Now look at your left hand. just look. Aware of the left part of your body. look at the left hand in an empty manner. Just look. Don't let any thought to pop up in your mind. look blankly on your left hand and try to feel the left portion of your body. …feel the left part….feel…

This very process will activate your right brain. When the right brain activates, it results in disappearance of thoughts. Your thought will start disappearing… [ Slowly after a few session of practicing this meditation , you will be able to instantly achieve this state of disappearance of thoughts ]

Now inhale deeply….count one.

Then exhale deeply…count two.

Inhale again…… deeply….. Count three….

exhale again…..deeply..…...count four.

Continue this deep breathing and count up to ten..

Now keep inhaling and exhaling after ten…11….12…13….but make your breathing normal (that is don't take deep breath. Just continue counting and breathing normally). Don't take deep breath. just breath in a normal way.

If in between the counting, you forget counting….start again.

Do these inhalation and exhalation for half an hour. Now again inhale and exhale one more time deeply. your meditation is complete. ??????

Complete ? yes for the first day it is enough. But keep in mind this is the first step…

Do the above meditation process for one week. just inhale and exhale for half an hour in lotus pose after activating your right mind by using the procedure described above. For one week just do this. ..

After one week…

Now make some modification in this meditation. The process will remain the same but now instead of counting both inhalation and exhalation, just count inhalation. It means fist of all inhale and exhale deeply while counting up to ten. Then restore normal breathing and count only inhalation as 11, 12. .... so in. Do this for one week.

Next week……

Continue doing this meditation for half an hour daily. But now, stop counting. Just inhale and exhale …inhale…..Exhale . Just be aware of inhalation and exhalation. Do it for one week

Next week…..

Just sit . Just sit in the lotus pose. Neither count nor inhale or exhale. The breathing will go on itself. But don't be aware of the inhalation or exhalation. Sit silently. Be aware of the moment. Be still. You'll be in state of Zen. The state of absolute stillness. The state of just sitting.

A very important thing before starting meditation

After knowing in detail about meditation and about 3 important yogic aids to prepare ourselves physically as well as mentally for meditation, it is natural that most of you will want to start meditation. However I beg your pardon for delaying your entry in to the world of meditation techniques for some more time. It is essential that we discuss some very important thing before starting meditation. Knowing them is really important if we really want to derive some real benefit from meditation. Meditation can make unbelievable change in once personality. It make the path of spiritual progress very smooth. So it is important to perform following three things before starting meditation :

(1) Be kind towards everybody

Please remember:

If you are not kind enough with your neighbors, if you are not loving with your fellow men, if you are not thankful to God for all things that he has given to you - then forget about meditation. It has no use for you and no meditation technique will help you.

Before doing meditation it is necessary that we have a feeling of true compassion for the whole universe. And when I say 'Whole universe', I really mean it. It means a feeling of compassion for all. For each and everybody. A feeling of love, compassion and kindness for every living and non-living object. Just be loving to your friend, your neighbours, your colleagues, your parents, your relatives and…… to your enemies and your competitors too !! Yes I mean it.

It may sounds quite odd, but it is the experience of millions of people who have meditated. With a bitter heart and animosity for someone, we simply can't meditate . It is simply impossible. I'll try to explain it:-

Please do this before starting meditation - just sit comfortably. You can sit on a chair, on bed, on earth in lotus pose (cross legged) or in anyway of your liking. Close your eyes and send thought of good will to everybody. Just say in your mind - " I love everybody. My love compassion and kindness is for everyone. "

It may be the case that somebody has hurt you. Somebody has deceived you or you have been the victim of other people's bitterness, ignorance, smallness or insecurities. Even if such is the case thank God that he does not make you like those people. Things could be worse. You could be one of them ! Forgive them honestly and say in you heart" Now I forgive them"

I know that it is really difficult to forgive many times. Sometimes we have to suffer badly for no faults of ours. However, I earnestly request you to please consider this clichéd but golden advise that to err is human and to forgive is divine. Please forgive those who have hurt you. Think over this: Had you been in their shoes, had you gotten the same kind of upbringing, education, had you been in the same sort of environment, then in all likelihood, you will be just like them . Please realize that we all are the result of our circumstances and thoughts. If people are bad, it is not that they have chosen to be bad. There are many factors like circumstances, financial & domestic conditions, educational background, friends-circle etc. that shapes our lives.

Just think from the perspective that people are bad because of many external factors over which they do not have any control. Have sympathy with them, be compassionate and loving towards them and…….forgive them.

It appears difficult but is not very tough. To forgive somebody requires some real effort but the mental peace it provides is worth that effort. Now spread feelings of goodwill to all.

Say- " May I find true happiness."

Say- " May all people who are close to my heart- my family, my parents, my very close friends; they all find true happiness."

Slowly start expanding your area of goodwill.

Say :

" May all people on earth- whether I know them or not, whether I like them or not, they all find true happiness. "

Spread this good will to not just people but to all living creatures in all directions.

"May they all find true happiness. I love them all. Everybody is my friend. No one is my enemy"

This internal preparation is a very powerful way of preparing body for meditation and will make you very calm. Now we come to the second thing…

(2) Thank God for everything you have :

This is the second thing to do. Once you have spread the thoughts of goodwill to whole universe, just be thankful to the universe. Be thankful to everybody for helping you at any point of time. Be thankful to God for all that he given to you. Have a feeling of gratitude for all that you have gotten. There are so many things in your life for which you should be thankful to God. Thank him for the present day he has given us, thank him for the pleasant wind outside, thank him for trees, for sky, for the breakfast you have in the morning, the lunch in office and dinner at home. Thank him for giving you wonderful friends, a loving spouse, and a lovely child. Thank him for the beautiful music, the sun rise, the baseball, the TV, DVD, the Car, the bus, the fruits, the day free of traffic jams ! Well the list is endless. 95% things in our life are all right. Forget about the rest 5%. If you find it difficult to find anything good in your life for which you should be thankful to this universe please read this inspiring verse

Think About this

Should you find it hard to get to sleep tonight;

Just remember the homeless family who has no bed to lie in.

*****
Should you find yourself stuck in traffic; don't despair.

There are people in this world for whom driving is an unheard of privilege.

*****
Should you have a bad day at work;

Think of the man who has been out of work for the last three months.

*****
Should you despair over a relationship gone bad;

Think of the person who has never known what it's like to love and be loved in return.

*****

Should you grieve the passing of another weekend;

Think of the woman in dire straits, working twelve hours a day, seven days a week, for -15.00 to feed her family.

*****

Should your car break down, leaving you miles away from assistance;

Think of the paraplegic who would love the opportunity to take that walk.

*****

Should you notice a new gray hair in the mirror;

Think of the cancer patient in chemo who wishes she had hair to examine.

*****

Should you find yourself at a loss and pondering what is life all about, asking "what is my purpose";

Be thankful. There are those who didn't live long enough to get the opportunity.

*****

Should you find yourself the victim of other people's bitterness, ignorance, smallness or insecurities;

Remember, things could be worse. You could be them!!!

*****

Should you decide to tell the above to a friend;

You might brighten someone's day!

*****

After reading the above inspiring verse, I hope you must be aware of so many things for which you should be thankful to God. So thank him and proceed to third step.

After becoming compassionate and thankful to the universe for all that it has given to you, come to the third step. This third step is unique and very helpful. It is like this:

(3) Just remind yourself that you are an ordinary, simple person.

It may sounds strange. But it is not. I am using the words 'remind yourself' .

You may say :- Hey! I am not an ordinary and simple person. I am so talented, so intelligent that only yesterday Boss gave me an appreciation letter recommending my out of turn promotion. Only because of my idea and original planning, my company could execute that different project in time. How I can be an ordinary person. I have been a consistent topper in my academic years. Well, there may be many ordinary and simple person but I am certainly not one of them. I am so intelligent, so beautiful and handsome, so rich !How can I call myself simple and ordinary when I am not.

If you are experiencing the same feelings as above or similar to that then let me tell you a truth:

" THERE IS NO PLACE FOR EGO IN MEDITATION."

Meditation, rather, will melt your ego and make you a down to earth person.

Yes ! you are important There are many achievements, many great qualities, many awards and success stories which can be attributed to you.

But tell me - does they really matters ?

One of the most important quality in the world is to become truly simple and down to earth without pretending.

Our life on earth is limited. There was a time when you were not there. Then you came in this world. And you are here, living life to its fullest, facing and solving its problems. And a day will come when you will no longer remain on earth. Death will end your small journey of life. In between these two days of birth and death there is a life which you have to live. Just think ! How many people will remember you after your death. Rest aside your death, if you are working, how many people will remember you after your retirement. Very few ! and if they do, they'll do it only for a few days ! Life is just like that. Tell me for how many times you remember those colleagues who have long retired. I can bet, seldom or never we remember them. It is not that we do not like them or respect the good work they did in their time; the thing is that every day comes with new sets of problems. We all spend our day in solving these newer sets of problems that we have no time to remember those who have worked with us in the past. It may sound bitter but the same thing will happen in your case too. You may be a brilliant and outstanding person. You may have the uncanny ability of solving the problems in the blink of an eye. You may be the most successful and intelligent person in your entire country.

However, remember this :

At present you are facing and solving 'a particular set of problems' that have arisen in a 'particular period of time'.

In future in 'an another set of time', a 'very different set of problems' will arise and there will be people who'll solve them. Only when a difficult problem having a precedent in the past will pop up, then somebody will remember you and say " hey this is similar to the one that Johnny had solved 5/10/x years ago !"

Why I am telling you all this. I just want to familiarize you with the ephemeral character of life. In the ultimate analysis nothing is going to matter. The truth is that no matter how important, affluent and successful we are or how ordinary, failure or simple we are, we all will be forgotten by generations to come. But don't take it as a bad thing. After all we ourselves have forgotten all man of past. Except a few rare great personalities like Lincoln, Gandhi & Jefferson etc how many men or women of 17th or 18th century are in our memories ? They all have been buried in the past. And sooner or later, one day we'll also be forgotten by future generation. Yes there will be some exceptions. Some great men and woman among us. But tell me honestly, how many greats of past are remembered by us ? We remember them whenever there is a need to take some inspiration from past. We remember them on their birthday or on their martyr day. But all in all, our 'present day' life is full of its own quota of 'day to day' problems that most of us will spend our life in solving them.

Remember the immortal saying of Professor William James - " The keenest desire of human being is the desire of becoming important"

Everybody wants importance. So don't expect that you will be considered a VIP forever. There were VIP in the past. There are VIPs in present (you may be one of them) and there will be VIPs in future. And this'll go on and on.

Actually our existence is just like an ocean. You are a wave of the ocean. You may be the most powerful, most thunderous, most beautiful and most inspiring wave of this ocean. But in the ultimate analysis you are just a wave. And the destiny of a wave is to merge again into the ocean. One day your little wave will also merge in the ocean of existence. Contemplate on this and understand the reality. We all are simple and ordinary in front of this huge cosmic play that is going on.

The socialism is disappearing fast. After USSR, China has also started adopting the capitalist way. It might happen that one day there will be no country left professing socialism. But the greatest socialist phenomenon will remain in this world and will continue making everyone equal. Do you know what is it ? It is … Death.

Death does not discriminate between poor or rich, healthy or ill, king or pauper. It makes everybody equal. All who have died are equal. Contemplate on this stark reality. Understand the ephemeral character of life.. and remind your self that you are a simple and ordinary person.

Let me summarize all that I have described - Before doing meditation, sit quietly in a comfortable position in a silent places. Then do these three contemplative acts:

(1) Be loving to all - Spread thoughts of good will to each and everybody in this universe. Remove all kind of animosity and hatred from your heart.

(2) Be thankful for all that you have gotten - Say thanks to God for all the good things he has given you. If you are an atheist, be thankful to the universe. Almost 95% things in our life are alright. Forget about the rest 5%.

(3) Remind yourself the ephemeral character of life - Life is small. We are just like a wave of ocean that will merge again into ocean.

Doing this three emotional contemplation will immensely help you in meditation. They will have a very cleansing effect on your internal being. You will be able to achieve meditative state very quickly. You will experience a deep mental peace. Though these 3 things are not meditation, they make the meditator highly receptive to all positive gain he/she will draw in meditation. I strongly recommend you to do these contemplative acts before meditation .

ENTER SPACE, SUPPORTLESS, ETERNAL, STILL.

Enter space, supportless, eternal, still. Three qualities of space have been given in this technique. Supportless: there can be no support in space. Eternal: it can never end. Still: it will be soundless, it will be silent. Enter this space, it is within you.

But the mind always asks for support. People come to me and if I say to them, "Just sit silently, with closed eyes, and don't do anything," they say, "Give me some AVALAMBAN, some support. Give me some mantra as a support, because I cannot sit." Just sitting is difficult. If I give them a mantra, it is okay. They can go on repeating the mantra. Then it is easy. With support you are never empty, that's why it is easy. Something must go on, you must be doing something. Doing, the doer remains: doing, you are filled. You may be filled with Aumkar, Aum, Ram, Jesus, Ave Maria, anything -- you may be filled with anything, but you are filled. Then you are okay Mind resists emptiness. It wants always to be filled by something else, because if it is filled it can be. If it is not filled it will disappear. In emptiness you will attain no no-mind. That's why mind asks for support.

If you want to enter inner space, don't ask for support. Drop all supports, mantras, gods, scriptures, whatsoever gives you a support. If you feel you are supported, drop it, and just move inside -- supportless. It will be fearful; you will feel scared. You are moving to where you can be lost completely. You may not be able to come back because all supports will be lost. Your contact with the bunk is lost and where this river will lead you, no one knows. Your support is lost. You may fall into an infinite abyss. Hence, fear grips you, and you ask for some support. Even if it is a false support, you enjoy it. Even a false support is helpful. Because for the mind it makes no difference whether a support is real or false -- it must be a support, that's the point. You are not alone, something is there and supporting you.

It happened once that a man came to me. He was living in a house where he felt there were spirits and ghosts. And he was very worried. Through worries, he started seeing more illusions. Through worries, he became ill, weak. His wife said, "If you live any longer in this house, I am leaving." His children were sent to some relative's house.

The man came to me and he said, "It has become very difficult now. I see them clearly. They walk in the night. The whole house is filled with spirits.You help me." So I gave him one of my pictures and said, "Take it. Now I will tackle those spirits. You simply sleep silently, you need not worry. Really, I will tackle them, I will see to them. Now it is my business. And don't interfere. Now you need not be concerned." The man came the next day. He said, "I slept, it was so beautiful! You have done a miracle!"

And I had not done anything but give a support. Through support the mind was filled. It was no longer vacant; someone was there.

In ordinary life you are leaning on many false supports, but they help. And unless you become strong enough, you will need them. That's why I say that this is the ultimate technique -- no support.

Buddha was dying and Anand asked him, "Now you are leaving us, what shall we do? How shall we attain? How shall we proceed now? When the master is gone, we will be wandering in darkness for many, many lives. No one is there to lead us, to guide us, the light is going out." So Buddha said, "It will be good for you. When I am no more, you become your own light. Move alone, don't ask for any support, because support is the last barrier."

And it happened. Anand had not become enlightened. For forty years he was with Buddha, he was the closest disciple, he was just like a shadow to Buddha, moving with him, living with him; he had had the longest contact with him. For forty years Buddha's compassion was falling over him, raining over him -- for forty years. But nothing happened, Anand remained as ignorant as ever. And the day after Buddha died, Anand became enlightened -- the next day, the very next day. The very support had been the barrier. When there was no more Buddha, Anand could not find any support. It is difficult. If you live with a Buddha, and the Buddha goes, then no one can be a support to you. Now no one will be worth clinging to. One who has been clinging to a Buddha cannot cling to anybody else in this world. This whole world will be vacant. Once you have known a Buddha and his love and compassion, then no love, no compassion can compare. Once you have tasted that, nothing else is worth tasting. So Anand was alone for the first time in forty years, totally alone. There was no way to find a support. He had known the highest support; now lower supports would not do. The next day he became enlightened. He must have moved into the inner space, supportless, eternal, still.

So remember, don't try to find any support. Be supportless. If you are trying to do this technique, then be supportless. That is what Krishnamurti is teaching, "Be supportless. Don't cling to a master. Don't cling to a scripture. Don't cling to anything."

That is what every master has been doing. A master's whole effort is first to attract you towards him, so that you start clinging to him. When you start clinging to him, when you become close and intimate with him, then he knows that the clinging must be cut. And you cannot cling to anyone else now -- that is finished. You cannot move to anyone else -- that is impossible. Then he cuts the clinging and suddenly you are left supportless. It will be miserable in the beginning. You will cry and you will weep and you will scream and the whole being will feel that you are lost. Into the very deepest depth of misery you will fall. But from there one arises alone, supportless.

ENTER SPACE, SUPPORTLESS, ETERNAL, STILL. That space has no beginning, no end. And that space is absolutely soundless. There is nothing -- not even a sound vibrating, not even a ripple. Everything is still.

That point is just within you. Any moment you can enter it. If you have the courage to be supportless, this very moment you can enter it. The door is open. The invitation is for all, all and everyone. But courage is needed; courage to be alone, courage to be empty, courage to dissolve and melt, courage to die. And if you can die within to your inner space, you will attain to the life which never dies, you will attain to AMRIT, to immortality.
