Public memorial service for Irwin
Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin's family has pledged to hold a public memorial service in response to the overwhelming public sympathy and support his shock death has sparked worldwide.
The Aussie icon's father Robert Irwin again fronted the media outside the family's wildlife park on Queensland's Sunshine Coast to announce the service would be held in the next two weeks at an undecided location.
The heartbroken family also formally declined the offer of a state funeral, opting to farewell the much-loved larrikin at a private service for family and close friends only in the next seven days.
Mr Irwin, 44, died on Monday after he was pierced in the heart by the barb of a stingray while filming a documentary off Port Douglas in the state's far north.
His solemn father announced on Wednesday to the media outside Australia Zoo that it was unlikely the family would accept the offer of a state funeral because he would have wanted to be
remembered as an "ordinary bloke".
"I wish to confirm my statement yesterday that the family has decided to decline the generous offer from the federal government for a state funeral for my son Steve," said Mr Irwin, who again donned dark sunglasses.
"We have decided today that a private service will be held within the next seven days for family members and closest friends only.
"Because of the tremendous public sympathy and support, we have decided to hold a full memorial service within the next two weeks at a suitable venue yet to be decided."
On behalf of the heartbroken Irwin family, Mr Irwin read the details from a written statement.
Media were barred from asking questions.
Mr Irwin later wandered around the massive "Diana-esque" makeshift shrine at the Zoo's entrance, crying at times as he gazed at the sight overflowing with flowers, condolence cards, balloons and other Aussie tokens such as crocodile toys and flags.
Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium has been named as a possible venue for an Irwin memorial service.
Australian music legend John Williamson, one of Steve Irwin's favourite performers who has regularly played at the Zoo on Australia Day, is expected to perform at the memorial service.
Williamson's "True Blue" was apparently one of the wildlife warrior's favourite songs.
The steady stream of mourners that have passed through the zoo's entrance to leave their stamp on the floral memorial since his death did not diminish today.
Fans of the Australian conservationist have also been urged to wear his signature khaki colour tomorrow as part of what a chain email has dubbed "International Khaki Day".
Meanwhile, a team handpicked and trained by Mr Irwin today returned to work for a crocodile feeding performance at the wildlife park.
"Today is the first show I've done since, since we all know what's happened - it's very, very difficult," croc feeder Toby Millyard said.
"Steve pretty much taught myself and the boys everything we know and there's no one as good as Steve."
People wishing to make online donations to Wildlife Warriors, the charity founded by Mr Irwin to fund conservation, were warned to watch out for three fake overseas websites.
"It just disgusts you, you know. I guess out of this you see both sides of humanity ... there's always those select few who are parasites," said Michael Hornby, the executive manager of Wildlife Warriors.
Security guards have also been employed to keep the media away from the funeral parlour where Mr Irwin's body was taken after it arrived at the Sunshine Coast Airport at Maroochydore from Cairns
late on Tuesday night.
It is believed wife Terri viewed her husband's body yesterday at Gregson and Weight Funerals at Caloundra for the first time.
