Biji kopi yang digunakan untuk membuat kopi biasa dan espresso biasanya berasal dari jenis yang sama.
Perbedaannya terletak pada proses penggilingan, penyeduhan, dan pemanggangan biji kopi.

Pemanggangan Biji Kopi
Biji kopi yang sama bisa digunakan untuk membuat kopi biasa dan espresso. Namun, biji kopi yang digunakan untuk membuat espresso biasanya akan dipanggang lebih lama untuk membuat biji kopi lebih gelap dan memberi rasa yang lebih kuat.

Penggilingan Biji Kopi
Perbedaan paling utama antara kopi biasa dengan espresso adalah proses penggilingan biji kopi.
Biji kopi yang digunakan untuk membuat espresso kehalusannya lebih bagus daripada yang digunakan untuk membuat kopi biasa.

Proses Penyeduhan Kopi Biasa
Kopi biasa diseduh dengan air panas atau hampir mencapai titik didih yang dituangkan di atas kopi bubuk atau dengan alat penggilingan French press.
Proses Penyeduhan Espresso
Espresso diseduh dengan memasukkan sejumlah kecil air yang sangat panas dan bertekanan tinggi melalui penggiling biji kopi. Espresso yang dihasilkan jauh lebih pekat dan lebih kental dibanding kopi biasa.

Kandungan Kafein
Jumlah air yang digunakan untuk proses penyeduhan secangkir espresso biasanya sekitar 59 ml, sedangkan untuk secangkir kopi biasa sekitar 178 ml.
Meskipun setiap cangkir memiliki kandungan kafein yang sama, namun espresso mengandung kafein lebih tinggi daripada kopi biasa dalam setiap ons-nya.
