Srihadi Soedarsono (b. Solo, Central Java, 1931)
Member of the Seniman Indonesia Muda (Young Indonesian Artist Association) in Yogyakarta in the late 1940s. Studied at the Insitute of Technology Bandung (ITB) - 1985, the Ohio State University in the USA 1960 and received his Master of Art in 1962. He lectures at the Jakarta Institute of Arts and the Institute of Technology Bandung. He exhibited in Indonesia, the United States, Australia and Brazil. He received cultural awards from both the Australian and Indonesian government. His works are represented in the collections of former Indonesian Vice President Adam Malik and the Neka Art Museum in Bali.

Pichhwai are intricate paintings which portray . They exist in the holy town of in the state of .
Krishna is shown in different moods, body postures, and attire more commonly found on a cloth or paper. It is a very ancient form of art passed on from generation to generation and it has a very devotional theme towards Lord Krishna.
The purpose of Pichhwais, other than its artistic appeal, is to narrate tales of Krishna to the illiterate. They have become the main export of Nathdwara and are in much demand among visitors in the area.
These artists make a close community with constant interaction. It is no wonder that many times a Pichhwai painting is a group effort, where several skillful painters work together under the supervision of a master artist.
This piece was bought by the present owner in 1978 in Bombay at a local antique store.
