Governor Joko "Jokowi" Widodo received the Soegeng Sarjadi Award in the Good Governance category during a public lecture late on Thursday.
According to a survey by the Soegeng Sarjadi School of Government, Jokowi garnered 55.2 percent votes from 1,250 people, beating President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who only got 11.4 percent. The two other nominees were former chief justice of the Constitutional Court (MK) Mahfud MD and State-Owned Enterprises Minister Dahlan Iskan.
"I was invited to attend a public lecture but it turned out I was here to collect an award," Jokowi said as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
The governor, who has delivered many public lectures across the capital city, reiterated his concern regarding red tape and governmental bureaucracy. He said procedures should be simplified and better management of the system.
"Our country has too many procedures. Bureaucracy has robbed us of everything. Procedures maybe tight, but it costs money eventually," he said.
