Well first of all it's not even a proper language... it's a messed up language that will destroy ur mandarin, english and malay skills...

It's like speaking english using malay grammar and adding some mandarin in it..

even their own government trying to persuade their people to speak proper english...

so say no to Singlish...

They are not using it on purpose. They dont use proper english because they can't. in fact people from many parts of the world have their own unique accents,
even us, indonesian.

indian speaks unique english, japanese too. singlish is just another example (a real mess though).

i had difficulties understanding japanese english and singlish. but some "able" japanese and singaporeans, speak english properly though. maybe better than me.
so you see, they will use proper english if they could.

i would say i disagree on the statement that they don't know how to speak english properly...

What do they learn in school ?? Singlish ?? No.. they learn proper english... they know how to use it, but they prefer not to use it...

and i'm not talking bout accent here.. u can speak english using any accent u want, it would still be english...

Us, Japanese, even Jamaican can still be categorize as speaking proper english with local accent... but Singaporean and Malaysian... oh my god... they mess it all up

if u want to use mandarin, use it, if u want to use malay use it, if u want to use english use it... just don't try to combine everything else and create an English with a Malay grammar...

but as it goes, they may had practice to speak English properly but sometimes they're just speak out their singlish
I agree too with statement saying that every country have their own accent, that every region had their own accent
well, since we still understand what they said (even in singlish) why do we matters ?

Well, I agree to what loki said. It's sucks to heard people talking to you with singlish. since we know , singlish is a bit lazy toned English

This is the first time i read the term Singlish. But from what Loki explained, i guess it's one of those many languages we refer to as Pidgin English. The most famous one is the one spoken by people in PNG. They call it 'Pisin'.

I disagree a bit with VenusGospel, though. Pidgin English has little to do with accent. It is in fact the work of people failing to master english, who still desperately want to be able to speak english. as a result, they come up with lazy shortcuts, using mothertongue words to compensate for their lack of grammar and vocab knowledge.
What they have in the end is a fucked up, sorry-ass excuse for a 'language'.

In my opinion: It is true that some Singaporean know how to speak english properly. But I believe, it's only for approximately under 30-year-old Singaporean, 40 at most. But for above 50-year-old people?? I don't think so.
Maybe that is where singlish came from, and until today, it has become their custom.

I'm pretty sure when dealing with the young Singaporean we might not found they speaking Singlish but still, they must had a bit of their Singaporean accent in their tongues in. We should understand their habits

Well it does if a certain country keep sending their students to study in singapore... the language these students adopt when they were there will ruin the whole concept of english they'd learned already.

I'm telling you this whole damn language is not good for everybody... Can you imagine yourself after finishing your degree in Singapore and then got a job in US or UK and then you realize that your english is already so fucked up, your grammar is a mess and start regretting why did you decide not to block that lousy language called Singlish..

It's all about fundamentals of our basic English, if we were teached English for 6 years and interact with the Singaporean for 3 years (refers to educational purpose in singapore) don't you think so that we actually, our friends are from the university, college. they are educated one , so they have a greater possibilities to use "right" English. Don't just always look it from the negative aspects, sometimes we should be positives too, brother ^_^

Almost all of my singaporean friends here (university students) speaks Singlish back in singapore and they admitted that they find it hard to speak the proper language coz they never use it regularly..
