Monga 720P 2DVD

Plot:

This is an interesting big-budget commercial movie about gangsters in Taiwan. I've seen a few Taiwanese films about gangsters or criminals before, but none this polished. Monga is well-acted and has good cinematography. But there are several problems that I've seen with this film. Firstly, Dragon Lee looks very much like Tom Cruise, and if you have Tom Cruise has one of your lead gangsters (let alone in a Taiwanese film) then I have to say it's bad casting.

Second thing that bothers me see the alternation between Taiwanese and Chinese being spoken by them. I've friends that speak Taiwanese only among each other, and no they do not alternate between Chinese; let alone gangsters in the 80's with proud Taiwanese heritage.

Thirdly, Monga is too clean and nice in the movie. In reality many parts of Monga is a seedy place with many sketchy people and teenagers. There are much trash on the ground, run-down houses... but in the film there isn't much portrayal of the seediness and grittiness of the area. I can't feel the Monga that I know in this movie. And that's the problem with commercial movies in Taiwan, where everything is just a bit too sanitized (English song played in the background, please).

This film lacks a bit of realism. The violence is there, and the older gangsters do looked more real, but overall it could be better. It's nice to see the Taiwanese film industry begin to revive slowly, but I wish commercialism won't destroy this movement.

The film goes back in time to reveal each little bit of the puzzle as he tries to find out the person who killed his wife and makes the audience feel just as confused as he is. The narrative closely follows a phone call Pearce has in which he talks about Sammy Jankis a former client of his who he believed had the same condition. The film takes an unexpected twist as the two characters have a lot more in common than is initially put across.

Plot:

I saw this today on an IMAX screen, it was a pretty cool piece, it had nice visuals that worked well. There were some nice shots flying over coast line which were very exciting, and lots of footage of schoals of sardines and their predators, it was nice to see dolphins, penguins and other animals on a huge screen in 3D. The documentary was about the natural food chain of the ocean and how it has been disrupted in many places by human fishing. This focused on the sea around South Africa where the food chain is still intact like it used to be elsewhere. It also showed a fair bit of fisherman and other people of the area which was much less interesting than the amazing land/sea shots. It spoke about how we need to protect the delicate balance of the food chain. It also had quite nice accompanying music.

Plot:

Kamui (Kamui gaiden) is based upon a popular manga comic created in 1964 by Sanpei Shirato but those unfamiliar with the manga will have no problem with the plot. Kamui (Kenichi Matsuyama) is a ninja who has tired of the killing and murderous ways of the ninja. He seeks to move on, but no-one is allowed to leave the ninja life. Ninja hunters abound, killing those who seek to quit and so Kamui is forced to run, and kill, and run some more. On his travels he meets the fisherman Hanbei (Kaoru Kobayashi) who has just killed Lord Gumbei’s (Koichi Sato) best hunting horse, so Gumbei wants his head. Escaping they meet again in Hanbei’s village on the seashore where Kamui meets Hanbei’s wife Sugaru (Koyuki) and his children, including 14 year old Sayaka (Suzuka Ohgo). Sugaru herself also has a ninja past and fears that Kamui has either come to kill her or will reveal her secret. When one is on the run, who can you trust?
