John 21:15-19 (NKJV)
15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Feed My lambs."
16 He said to him again a second time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Tend My sheep."
17 He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?" Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love Me?" And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You." Jesus said to him, "Feed My sheep.
18 "Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish."
19 This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, "Follow Me."
I believe you've heard this passage many times. It's about Jesus wanted to test Peter of his faith and love to Him, and because Peter said, he loves Jesus, Jesus said feed His sheep. But then Peter was asked three times the same question, as Peter denied Jesus three times as well, and that makes Peter sad, and he was challenged to say, "You know that I love You." Challenged to really feed His sheep. If you live in Indonesia, you should know the New Student Orientation Week, in here it's called MOS (Masa Orientasi Siswa). I have a briefing about my NSOW in my new High School, and we had a morning devotional. It's about this passage, to show us Peter's determination, to face the challenge.
Is it true? Let's have a little bible study of this. matter.

You already know kinds of love. Here, there is Agape (αγαπος agapos) and Phileo (φιλος philos). Agape is a Godly love, the unconditional love. Phileo is a friendship love, a true love of each other. You can read above, Jesus asked Peter, "Do you love (agapas) Me?" The first love word was agape. Then Peter answered, "Yes Lord, I do love (philo) You." This states Peter's inability to love God and others (of course, if you love (agape) God), with the unconditional love. Why was Peter sad? Because Jesus changed His question: Do you love (philei) me? With all his heart, Peter said, Lord, You know all things, into the depths of my heart, You know I still can't love You with the unconditional love, but I can only love you with my friendship love.
You know how to love God with a Godly love, Agape? You can do it with the help of the Holy Spirit of course. And you know, the story after all the disciples filled with Holy Spirit? They were all willing to die for Jesus. Peter, when Jerusalem was burned down by King Nero to search for Jesus' disciples, he didn't run away, he was willing to be crucified upside down. Thomas, is a strong believer, he preached the gospel to India, and there he was killed; his body was mutilated by tying his head, arms and legs to 5 bulls to separate his body parts alive and his body was fried.
Are you ready if Jesus ask you, do you love (agapas) Me?
