My Comment on 1986 Debate between Rev. Stanley Sjöberg and Syeikh Ahmad Deedat
“Is the Bible the Word of God?”
You may have heard these famous names. The Bible teacher and professor, Reverend Stanley Sjoeberg, and the Bible debater, Syeikh Ahmad Deedat. As you may have known, Syeikh Ahmad Deedat have won or deemed won many debates between he and many Christians evangelist, including Pastor Sjoeberg. And he has converted some ministers after debating with him, to Islam, of course. I stumbled upon YouTube at May 5, and saw videos of their debate and just felt like I want to comment this stuff; maybe it can be helpful to you, readers of BibEL AppEL.
Before I proceed to the main content, I better warn you to avoid these kinds of debate, especially if you’re not cold-headed. It’s OK if you're just answering questions. But you better don't open debates of this. You may be angered, because of your Jesus being mocked. Like Pastor Sjoeberg in the video, stated he was “full of wrath” and accusing Deedat a “Nazi Officer”, and some Swedish in the questioning session. I have debated to some Muslims in a forum. I found that they, ignoring their stupidity, are stubborn, and some of them are making fun of bad tempered Christians there. They even make stupid statements such as “Jesus was recognized as Lord after the Nicene Council”. You better remember Proverbs 20:3 and Titus 3:9.

Mr. Deedat brought and presented some bible versions. First he introduced the Douay-Rheims Version 1958 Revision (inlcluding Deuterocanonical books), then Scofield Reference Bible based on KJV (Authorized/King James Version), a Swedish Bible based on KJV (a study bible), RSV (Revised Standard Version) Bibles of 1952 Revision and 1971 Revision. Then he asked Pastor Sjoeberg, “Which do you accept as the Word of God?”
Books in the Bible were canonized by the Roman Catholic Church, and as you know church under reformation movement decline the Deuterocanons. Catholics accused Protestants that they mutilated the Holy Bible, Protestants said that Deuterocanons were just “belongs to second-canon books”, and other reasons.
Literally, none of the bibles we, Pastor Sjoeberg, nor Mr. Deedat use are the true Word of God. They’re just translation. The Old Testament is translated from Hebrew Text and there are several rewrite versions, some institutions use Septuagint (LXX, the Greek Old Testament). The New Testament is translated from Greek Text, from Textus Receptus (Vatican Codex), or Wescott-Hort GNT Text. And some use Jerome’s Latin Vulgate (in Latin, of course). And maybe Aramaic-Peshitta.
But what I want to say is, those are still Word of God. We can’t judge this version’s right or wrong, especially if you don’t know Greek or Hebrew or Latin. So you don’t know the original text like Bible scholars, or me (hee-hee). Why they are Word of God? Because they consists of translations of the original scriptures, writers are used by God to write God’s heart content, through Holy Spirit, teach writers about the past and history, and wrote more songs and psalms as we read in Book of Psalms, write proverbs, and write letters to churches. The Bible is the Word of God reveals all about our God. Our Lord Jesus Christ. This book reveals us the laws, our relationship status with God, the important thing; salvation, teachings, and many, many more. Some translations maybe invalid, corrupted, so let’s find the most suited version, and I recommend New King James for English. No translations are perfect. I know that you know that. But translators work very hard to translate all the verses, some paid some don’t, just to bring the Word of God to familiar languages for the readers. So we all can read and learn the Word of God, and yes, to know God more.
Part 3
Elohim means gods. Yes it is. But Mr. Deedat should note that Genesis 1:3, the word “said” originated from the word “vayo’mer”, and is a third-person singular word. If you’re Indonesian, you can read http://www.sarapanpagi.org/elohim-study-kata-vt3.html. The plural word Elohim is “plural of majesty” word, describing the oneness of Father Spirit Son. Our Lord is EKHAD, not YAKHID. All translators didn’t edit the meaning. They didn’t deceive people.
As of Moses is the one who wrote the Pentateuch, but he is written “died” in Deuteronomy. You can read it here:

Part 4
Identical phrases? Well, I do not know anything about this, this is new for me. However, Mr. Deedat’s statement that the writers are centuries apart, I don’t think that’s totally correct. It’s the same age. Book of Kings wrote the history of Israel kings, the book of Isaiah wrote the story of the prophet Isaiah. Did Isaiah the co-writer of the book of Kings? We all don’t know. It’s unnecessary I think.

About Luke 1:2-3. They were inspired by Holy Spirit to write. Whether Holy Spirit told them what they should write, nor lead them in what they want to write. By the way, do you know the meaning of brackets in AV or NKJV? The phrase “as was supposed” is too in Indonesian translations, and in Textus Receptus (the word “enomizeto”).

Just a quick explanation, a bath (totally not related to currency) is a liquid measurement unit for 1/10 homer, or 8 gallons (UK) and 3 quarts (UK), total 39 liters. Bath isn’t permanent measurement unit, it may vary through ages and we know the writers of these books are ages apart. Even though the amount was so much difference, explained writer of Chronicles said the “sea” 3000 baths of capacity. The writer of the book of Kings said the “sea” contained 2000 baths of water. John 17:12 occurred when Judas still among the disciples. In John 18:9, Judas was already with the Romans, therefore the perdition son is not among them anymore. There was maybe a mistake because of misreading the Hebrew letters, or misunderstanding of the Hebrew words. As for Saul’s problem of whether he inquired or did not inquire of the Lord, Mr. Deedat is fully wrong by just picking verse by verse. 1 Samuel 28:6 is a part of 1 Samuel 28:1-25, about Saul was seeking help from a woman that has familiar spirit and enquired of her (didn’t inquire of the Lord anymore). Is a parallel to 1 Chronicles 10:14, that he is not seeking help from the Lord anymore.

Mr. Deedat don’t understand the word “concubine” in Jewish culture. Concubines (pelegesy) were illegitimate wives (isyah). About God of confusion, Mr. Deedat wrongly examined the verses. 1 Corinthians 14:33 is about well-organized service/liturgy, and using the word akastasia for confusion, from akastos, means not well ordered.
OK, Bible as a dangerous book? That’s ridiculous. It’s like letting your children see sexual materials for educational purpose (sex education) within parental (teachers of parents) supervising, and so teaches them not to do free sex. Or see sexual materials in pornography manner. Nothing can be understood right without guidance, including learning Bible. That’s why you should lead your children in learning bibles, and when it’s already time, you can show the “so called X-rated by George Bernard” things, like explaining Songs of Solomon. Samson maybe didn’t have legal punishment from the Jews, but the aftermath of Samson was so tragic right? That serves.
Acts 8:30-31a - So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, "Do you understand what you are reading?" And he said, "How can I, unless someone guides me?"

I’m not sure, whether the answer is for “which do you accept as the Word of God” or “which do you accept as the right translation of the Word of God”. Again, the Deuterocanon was being argued, whether it’s the Word of God or no. In my humble opinion, maybe the Protestants rejected the canon and not inserting them into their bibles. This is true, but we’re not saying that the canon is false. We use them too, but not in our daily Bible. Check why, in part 18.

1952 RSV using the most ancient manuscripts? You maybe have not seen older bibles. And you believe in all they said in the preface?

The comment about beating with a toothbrush was hilarious. There was a Muslim teen, commented in this part, had +13 points, saying the Pastor don’t know how to debate, bringing up the subject “is the Quran Word of God”. Funny part too. Deedat brought up about the writer of the Gospel Matthew. Who is the writer? Christian scholars have stated the writer of Matthew can’t be Matthew who was formerly called Levi the tax collector. Why was the Gospel book named Matthew? I don’t know, I’m not a scholar. Maybe the writer of this book really named Matthew. If you read the article for part 7, you may have read, the Matthew who wrote this cannot be a Palestinian Jew, the real Jew. Because he didn’t understand Isaiah’s parallelism about those donkeys.

And if the writer of Gospel according to Matthew is really Matthew of Jesus’ Disciples, it shouldn’t be a problem. I can write my story of my experience into a narration text, instead of a recount text. Actually, does that really mean something fatal or crucial?
“Jesus” isn’t the subject? Deedat was truly wrong. He studied bible, but he did not read John 1? OK Muslims states we love Jesus. They believe He is a Christ (Messiah, Meshiach, M’sheekha, meaning “the anointed one”) too and born miraculously. And with God’s permission, Jesus was saved from Hades. He allowed Jesus’ request: don’t let Me die. Is this the Jesus we know? This Jesus contradicts with the words in Bible. This Jesus does not care about mankind.

The Quran was promised in John? What was said in John was not Quran, or Quran will be given to you, because this book cannot contain so much of Jesus’ works. Not the Quran. But the writer told us that his story was only a little from many. There are many more, and it continues until today, and you can experience it yourself. This is a similar question as whether the promised comforter (parakletos) is the Holy Ghost or Muhammad. Does Muhammad comfort you until now? No he can’t, can he?

Alcoholics aren’t poisons and ain’t restricted as the Torah restricted animals like dogs and pigs to be eaten. As long they bring health to the body, it is good. And like any other medicines, alcoholics like wine aren’t supposed to be used in a malfunctioned form and reason of usage. Galatians 5:20 mentioned witchcraft. In Greek, it is pharmakeia. From the word you can say that it’s related to pharmacy. Yes it is. Ancient witchcraft may use many kinds of formulas to make a concoction of use to do something magic. This includes: smoking weeds; inject narcotics and using drugs without a doctor’s medical advice, using ecstasy, using “hallucination tattoos” (LSD or Lysergic Acid Diethylamide), inhale dangerous objects like thinners or LPG, and over-limited amount of alcoholic beverages consumption. It can make you “fly”, right? Those are “pharmakeia”. Doctors use narcotics to treat their patient, but in normal and minimum usage, just as when we consume wines, not for “flying”.

Another stupid question from an audience. If you believe in the true faith, if you’re poisoned you won’t die. That if you don’t know that it has been poisoned and so God will protect you. But if you know that it’s poisoned and you intend to drink it, no protection from God because it’s your will. And moreover, if you’re doing this to test this verse, you’re testing God and you know that we shouldn’t test God in any ways except in decimal offerings. Then you’ll end in hell because you’ve committed self-murder or suicide. The audience brought a poisonous liquid; I don’t know what it was. Why, look at the faces of the Muslims when Pastor Sjoeberg asked do they want to see him died because he drink a poisent there. They were showing laughter, smiles, and happy faces, faces of acceptation. Why? An audience showed an expression of “yes just kill yourself”. What?

Well done, Rev. Sjoeberg made a wonderful answer of the previous question.
By stating that every translation of a verse has a Arabic text, so, Mr. Deedat implicitly tells us he has never seen any interlinear bible like we all have known and some of us has, in papers or in our computers.

This is a similar question as whether the promised comforter (parakletos) is the Holy Ghost or Muhammad. Does Muhammad comfort you until now? No he can’t, can he?

Alcoholics aren’t poisons and ain’t restricted as the Torah restricted animals like dogs and pigs to be eaten. As long they bring health to the body, it is good. And like any other medicines, alcoholics like wine aren’t supposed to be used in a malfunctioned form and reason of usage. Galatians 5:20 mentioned witchcraft. In Greek, it is pharmakeia. From the word you can say that it’s related to pharmacy. Yes it is. Ancient witchcraft may use many kinds of formulas to make a concoction of use to do something magic. This includes: smoking weeds; inject narcotics and using drugs without a doctor’s medical advice, using ecstasy, using “hallucination tattoos” (LSD or Lysergic Acid Diethylamide), inhale dangerous objects like thinners or LPG, and over-limited amount of alcoholic beverages consumption. It can make you “fly”, right? Those are “pharmakeia”. Doctors use narcotics to treat their patient, but in normal and minimum usage, just as when we consume wines, not for “flying”.

Another stupid question from an audience. If you believe in the true faith, if you’re poisoned you won’t die. That if you don’t know that it has been poisoned and so God will protect you. But if you know that it’s poisoned and you intend to drink it, no protection from God because it’s your will. And moreover, if you’re doing this to test this verse, you’re testing God and you know that we shouldn’t test God in any ways except in decimal offerings. Then you’ll end in hell because you’ve committed self-murder or suicide. The audience brought a poisonous liquid; I don’t know what it was. Why, look at the faces of the Muslims when Pastor Sjoeberg asked do they want to see him died because he drink a poisent there. They were showing laughter, smiles, and happy faces, faces of acceptation. Why? An audience showed an expression of “yes just kill yourself”. What?

By stating that every translation of a verse has a Arabic text, so, Mr. Deedat implicitly tells us he has never seen any interlinear bible like we all have known and some of us has, in papers or in our computers.
