Rhoma’s fake degree could lead to jail time

Education and Culture Minister Muhammad Nuh said a criminal probe could commence against self-styled king of dangdut Rhoma Irama, for allegedly using a fraudulent professor title on his presidential campaign posters.

Rhoma was mocked on social media after photos of the posters circulated online. The posters were created by Rhoma’s official group of supporters, Rhoma Irama for Presiden RI (Riforri), soon after the group was established in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, in January.

Nuh said that Rhoma’s professor title should be verified within the national standards of certifications based on the 2003 law on the national education system. “The law mandates that we should check the validity of overseas degrees and titles. We also have to check the accreditation of the institution and its curriculum,” he said as quoted by kompas.com.

Nuh said that if the title was found to be fraudulent, Rhoma could be prosecuted.

Rhoma said that he obtained the professor title from the American University of Hawaii in 2005 when three professors from the university visited Indonesia. “They gave me the title of ‘Professor of Music’, because they said I was an expert of Indonesian dangdut music,” he said.
