The Jakarta Police have invited Internet users to participate in discouraging motorists from encroaching on Transjakarta bus lanes by uploading photos of violators on a planned social forum website.

Jakarta Police traffic security and safety head Adj. Sr. Comr. Irfan Satya said on Monday that the police would launch the website www.tertiblantas.com in December.

“It is 40 percent ready, but we want to make it perfect before the official launch,” he said.

He said the website would be like a social forum where the public could upload photos and post comments.

“We will design it as a fun website that gives a score to each member every time he or she uploads a new photo of a traffic violation,” he said, adding that those with a certain score would be given special titles.

Irfan said the main purpose of involving Internet users, popularly known as netizens, was to make the public more sensitive to traffic violations and to create a deterrent effect on busway trespassers.

He added that the police would follow up on uploaded photographed reports by summoning the owners of the offending vehicles, including those encroaching on the Transjakarta bus lanes. “We will summon them to court for trial,” he said.

The police’s call is part of authorities’ plan to impose hefty fines on motorists trespassing on the busway.

In relation to the discouragement of traffic violations, Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said recently that members of the public could act as traffic watchdogs by interacting with the city traffic police via their official Twitter account @TMCPoldaMetro.

He said the public could share information on any traffic violation by mentioning the account on their tweets or photos of traffic violations.

Besides inviting the public to participate in making the city’s streets free of gridlock due to traffic violations, the city police started on Monday to impose a maximum fine of Rp 500,000 (US$43.60) on motorcyclists and Rp 1 million on car drivers encroaching on the busway.

Rikwanto said the city police decided to enforce the regulation after intense discussion with the city administration and the courts.

He said the regulation was not new as it was stipulated in the 2009 Traffic Law. “We will be impartial in imposing fines. We will apply it to all violators, no matter whether they are ordinary people or high-ranking officials.”

Rikwanto also ensured that there would be no monkey business on the streets. Police officers would instruct busway encroachers to turn up for trial and pay the fine at the court.

Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo hailed the busway policy and said it would pave the way for the arrival of more buses over the next two months. “We’ll see fewer motorists encroaching on the Transjakarta bus lanes and no more trespassers will be seen upon the gradual arrival of new buses over the next two months.” he said.

Wow, so many intrepid breach the busway =))
Should the government secure the busway with an electric busway fence? :-j
