Having secured a place at the 2014 Axiata Cup semifinals, Indonesia’s badminton team did not lose its grip against neighbor Singapore as it achieved a 4-0 victory over the city-state on Monday.

Tommy Sugiarto opened the day with a 21-13, 21-11 win against Loh Kean Yew in the men’s singles event, followed by Bellaetrix Manuputty, who crushed Chen Jiayuan 21-18, 21-18 in the women’s singles division.

The 2008 men’s doubles Olympic gold medalists Hendra Setiawan and Markis Kido had a memorable reunion at the US$1 million tournament. The pair defeated Hendra Wijaya/Hee Yong Kai Terry 21-19, 21-10.

Mixed doubles pair Riky Widianto/Richi Puspita Dili widened the gap between both teams with a 21-15, 21-17 win against Loh Kean Hean/Tan Wei Han.

Indonesia maintains its lead at the table standings with 18 points, followed by Thailand with 14 points and European All-Stars and Malaysia with 10 and nine points, respectively.

“We predicted the results after seeing the lineup of the Singapore team. They [Singapore team] did not field their main team,” Indonesian team manager Aryono Miranat said.

Indonesia still has two more matches against the European All-Stars and Thailand on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

“The matches [against European All-Stars and Thailand] will be more interesting because they present good and experienced players,” said Aryono. “We hope to win the remaining matches.”

The Axiata Cup is an annual team badminton tournament that has been held since 2012. The top four teams with the most points after the league round on Nov. 27 until Dec. 4 in Jakarta, Indonesia, qualify for the playoffs, which will be held in Kuala Lumpur on Dec. 6- 7.

Teams from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines, along with two all-star teams (from Asia and Europe) are competing in the event. Indonesia was the inaugural winner in 2012, with Malaysia snatching the title last year.
