BAPE's roots may be found in the ura-Harajuku culture of the early '90s, just like those of the majority of Japanese streetwear superstars. The majority of today's heavyweights, such as Neighborhood's Shin Takazawa, WTaps' Tetsu Nishiyama, Sk8thing's Hiroshi red bape shirt Fujiwara, and others, were actually a bunch of buddies working in the same scene, each doing his own thing and supporting the others along the way. Nowhere soon established itself as a pillar of the developing ura-Harajuku scene with its blend of imported American street and sportswear and pioneering Japanese streetwear labels like WTaps-predecessor Forty Percents Against Rights. Nigo was one of its leading figures.
